The Food and Drug Administration Replenish 911 regulates the labeling of food and its accuracy, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's the whole truth. Frequently, the label will state that each package contains two or three servings. However, it is natural to assume, when reading a label quickly, that the candy bar you hold in your hand is a single serving. Oftentimes, this is not the case. The manufacturer may be hoping that our eyes go directly to the fat or caloric content without realizing that the entire package actually contains those numbers multiplied by two or three. Technically, they are being honest about the individual servings, but a "serving" was deemed as perhaps only 1/2 or 1/3 of the bag. You have to be a detective to figure out what is really meant. But the average consumer shouldn't have to assume our packaged labels are deceitful. When you're looking for the nutritional content of all you're going to eat, you should be told all you're going to eat. Sadly, this is not the case. It stands to reason that we should more carefully scrutinize our food labels, read the fine print, and even read between the lines. Someone not in the know might see only what they want to see, perhaps never noticing they're being deceived until the scale reads a bit differently than normal.
