Golf buggy trouble at Melbourne GP
by Roger Bentley (2020-06-21)
As thousands of racegoers descended on Albert Park for the Melbourne Grand Prix over the weekend, police were kept busy arresting and interviewing four people in relation to the unauthorised use of the motorised cart.
The three men and one woman, including a British man, were released pending summons.
The buggies are usually used at the grand prix to chauffeur VIP guests and celebrities to and from corporate boxes and marquees.
Superintendent Tony Silva said that for an event that attracts such a large number of people, police were generally pleased with crowd behaviour.
"We were disappointed that a small number of people chose to engage in criminal behaviour," he said on Monday.
"A highly-visible police presence meant that police were able to swiftly deal with the small number of incidents which occurred at the grand prix."
